TBD: Further Inquiries into Effective Questions

by Jim Burke

The previous post about “Teaching by Design” (TBD) and its connection to developing more effective questions continues to fascinate me this week. Here are some additional questions to share as I keep tweaking and trying them out with the class as both close reading and class discussion questions. Will continue to share what seems to work.

I am creating these questions using the Webb Depth of Knowledge Model I adapted and the Anchor Words I have been writing about recently.

  1. Thanks, Margaret. I will. I just posted this to Twitter, but check out this cool sample exam and its questions (I especially love the cartoons) by Steven Pinker.

  2. These questions on 1984 look wonderful. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed as I try to redo all units to meet common core standards. Do you know of any common core aligned materials on A Separate Peace, The Book Thief, and Julius Caesar?
